You Are What You Eat—But Not Just What You Think

You are what you eat, or so they say—

But it’s more than the bread that crumbles away,

Or the ripened peach, its juices sweet—

You consume the world through every beat.

You eat the colors the dawn unfurls,

The shadows that dance and twist and swirl.

The threads of light, both soft and bare,

Weave into your soul like whispered air.

You swallow the sights, both sharp and dim,

A painter’s world drawn deep within.

You eat the music, the trembling tune,

The hum of stars beneath the moon.

Each note a thread that winds your core,

A melody stitched to you evermore.

The echoes carve where silence hides,

Turning bones to bells, where sound resides.

You eat the scents that linger near—

The rain-soaked earth, the burning cedar.

Scented ghosts from moments past,

A memory’s breath that holds you fast.

In every inhale, the world seeps through,

A part of the outside becomes part of you.

You eat the touch of silk and stone,

The textures your fingers claim as their own.

The jagged edge, the gentle press,

The weight of life’s quiet caress.

Every surface, both rough and smooth,

Leaves its mark and shifts your groove.

You eat the stories your tongue has known,

The bitter, the sweet, the seeds you’ve sown.

Unspoken truths with their metallic sting,

And lies that slip like a silver ring.

The flavors linger, they shape your stride,

A compass for paths you choose to bide.

You are what you eat, yes, this is true—

But it’s more than the flesh, the fruit, the brew.

You are the feast your senses hold,

A banquet of moments, both bright and bold.

So savor the beauty, the tender and wild,

The world’s rich gifts to its wandering child.

For even wonder can leave its trace,

And hunger feeds on the human race.

You are what you eat—so choose with care,

For the world is alive, and it’s yours to bear.

The phrase “You are what you eat” has been repeated countless times as a way to remind us that the food we consume shapes our physical health. But as I sit with this familiar adage, I can’t help but expand its meaning, realizing that what we take in goes far beyond the material and the tangible. This is the inspiration behind my poem You Are What You Eat, where I explore the profound truth that our experiences, emotions, senses, and the very world around us are consumed by our hearts and souls in ways we may not fully realize.

The act of eating is often seen as a simple physical process, a necessity to fuel the body. But every day, we are feeding more than just our stomachs—we are feeding our minds, our spirits, and our sense of self. We absorb the colors of the dawn, the textures of the earth, the music that stirs our souls, and the scents that bring memories rushing forward. Our senses are not just passive receivers; they are active participants in shaping who we are. Through every beat of our hearts, every breath we take, we consume the world around us.

In the poem, I describe how we “eat the colors the dawn unfurls” and “the shadows that dance and twist and swirl.” These lines reflect how deeply the outside world infiltrates our internal world. Colors, light, and even shadows—things we may not always consciously notice—leave their marks, weaving their way into our being. These everyday elements shape our thoughts, our creativity, and our emotional landscapes.

Similarly, the sounds we hear “carve where silence hides”—turning our bones into bells where sound resides. Music, conversations, the hum of nature, even the rustling of leaves—these moments reverberate inside us, creating an inner symphony that binds us to the world. Every note, every word, becomes part of our essence.

I also explore how we consume memories and emotions. The scents we inhale, like the “rain-soaked earth” or the “burning cedar,” trigger something deep within us, reminding us of past moments, lost loves, and forgotten places. Scents have this uncanny ability to transport us through time and space, embedding themselves in our souls in ways words cannot. And in every touch we feel—the silk, the stone, the rough and the smooth—the textures of life mark us, shifting the way we move through the world.

But it is not only the world around us that we consume. We also “eat the stories our tongue has known.” Every conversation, every unspoken truth, every lie we’ve told and believed—these all shape our inner worlds. These stories inform our decisions, our actions, and the way we view ourselves and others. The flavors of life linger long after the moment passes, guiding us, influencing us, sometimes even weighing us down.

So, yes, you are what you eat—but it is far more than just the food you put into your body. You are the sum of the moments, the sensory experiences, the stories, and the emotions that shape you. You are a living, breathing banquet of all that has come before you, all that surrounds you, and all that you are willing to receive.

As you move through your days, consider what you are consuming—not just in the form of meals, but in every encounter, every sight, every sound, and every feeling. Be mindful of what you allow to enter your world. Every moment, every interaction, is an opportunity to feed yourself something nourishing, something that helps you grow, expand, and thrive. Just as we choose what food we put into our bodies, we also have the power to choose what emotional and sensory experiences we let shape our essence.

In this poem, I invite you to savor the beauty of the world—the tender, the wild, the bright, and the bold. Let these moments nourish you, for they are the feast that will shape who you become. And as you choose, remember that even wonder can leave its trace, and hunger is part of the human experience. We are all part of this grand banquet of life, so choose wisely, and savor every moment. The world is alive, and it’s yours to bear.

You Are What You Eat is more than just a saying—it’s an invitation to reflect on the ways we consume and the ways we allow the world to shape us.

And so, I leave you with this: What are you choosing to eat today?

I would love to hear your thoughts. What have you noticed about the way you take in the world? How do you consciously choose what to consume—emotionally, mentally, and spiritually? Share your reflections in the comments below.
